Mawkyrwat became a full- fledged Civil Sub- division of West Khasi Hills District on 26 June 1982. This year, 2010 is the twenty eight year of the establishment of the Civil sub- division. The Sub- divisional administration feels that in this age of information and communication technology, it is imperative to have a website for the sub- division so that there is better information dissemination about the place.
Mawkyrwat is 75 kms away and two hour drive from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya and 51 kms from Nongstoin, the district Head quarter of West Khasi Hills district via Mawthawpdah road and 62 kms via Pariong road. The Civil Sub-Division is situated in the Southeastern part of the West Khasi Hills District. To its north is Nongstoin, west is Garo Hills and south is Bangladesh. It comprises all the villages of Maharam Syiemship and some villages of Langrin Syiemship and Mawiang Syiemship. It constitutes 261 villages covering an area of approximately 2000sq.kms with a total population of approximately 61,032.It has two Community and rural development (C&RD) Blocks- Mawkyrwat and Ranikor. It comprises of two Assembly Constituencies, 36-Mawkyrwat and 35-Ranikor with a voting population of about 40,000.
As the name suggests, Mawkyrwat is bound by gigantic rocks (Maw in Khasi means stone). There are stretches of tropical greens and myriad melodious streams from the rivulets that ride down the enchanting lofty ravines that overlook the plains of Bangladesh.
The Climate in Mawkyrwat varies with altitudes. Its lies in the same tropical monsoon belt of Sohra (cherrapunjee) and Mawsynram and receives heavy rainfall during summer. Winter is very cold and dry. Spring and autumn are very pleasant.
Mawkyrwat is the centre of trade for the people of the area. Market is held once every four days. It is one of the largest rural markets in West Khasi Hills. The people of the Khasi Tribe predominantly inhabit it. The people have their own dialect, a district dialect and sub-dialect. Majority of the people have now converted to Christianity. There are also people of Tribal Religion.
